Procedure
1185 mg (5.38 mmol) of 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole-5-carbaldehyde (Intermediate 14) are suspended in 56 ml of dichloromethane. 2285 mg (6.89 mmol) of carbon tetrabromide and then 6890 mg of polymer-supported triphenyl phosphine (1 mmol/g; 6.89 mmol) are added. The mixture is shaken at rt for 24 hr. The polymer is filtered and sequentially washed with dichloromethane, EtOH and MeOH. The filtrates are concentrated and the residue (2.2 g) is chromatographically purified over silicagel eluting with chloroform/EtOH (100/0 to 90/10). 0.3 g of pure title compound are obtained (20% yield).
