A 100-mL single-neck round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a reflux condenser was charged with 2-bromo-4-chloronicotinaldehyde 103a (660 mg, 3.0 mmol), 4,4-dimethyl-7-thia-10-azatricyclo[6.4.0.02,6]dodeca-1(8),2(6)-dien-9-one 106h (665 mg, 3.0 mmol), tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) (270 mg, 0.3 mmol), XantPhos (340 mg, 0.6 mmol), Cs2CO3 (2.0 g, 6.0 mmol), and 1,4-dioxane (20 mL). After three cycles of vacuum/argon flush, the mixture was heated at 90° C. for 5 h. It was then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by silica-gel column chromatography eluting with dichloromethane to afford 109a as yellow solid (105 mg, 14%). MS: [M+H]+ 361.
