A flask is charged with 3-[bis[[(1,1-dimethylethyl)oxy]carbonyl]amino]-5-bromo-pyridine (1.12 g, 3.0 mmol), N-methyl-6-chloroindole-2-boronic acid (754 mg, 3.6 mmol), finely crushed potassium phosphate (1.27 g, 6.0 mmol) and DMF (20 mL). After degassing for 15 min, Pd(PPh3)4 (173 mg, 0.15 mmol) is added. The flask is flushed with nitrogen and the mixture is heated to 90° C. and stirred for 5 h. The mixture is then cooled to room temperature and poured into water (100 mL). The mixture is extracted with EtOAc three times and the combined organic phase is washed with water (10 mL) twice. The organic phase is then dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue is purified by silica gel flash chromatography (ethyl acetate-heptane, 0:1 to 1:9) to give 3-[bis[[(1,1-dimethylethyl)oxy]carbonyl]amino]-5-(6-chloro-1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)-pyridine. MS (ESI) m/z 458.1 (M+H)+.
