Isopropylmagnesium chloride (15.3 mL, 30.6 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylate (3.0 g, 10 mmol) and O,N-dimethyl-hydroxylamine (1.5 g, 15 mmol) in THF (100 mL) at −10° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour then the mixture was added to water and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-N-methoxy-N-methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxamide. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.13-7.15 (m, 1H), 6.43-6.45 (m, 2H), 4.41-4.42 (m, 2H), 3.79-3.82 (m, 6H), 3.67 (s, 3H), 3.46-3.49 (m, 3H), 3.18 (s, 3H), 2.70-2.77 (m, 1H), 2.57-2.63 (m, 1H). MS ESI calc'd. for C16H23N2O5 [M+H]+ 323. found 323.
