MeMgBr (2.3 mL, 6.8 mmol) was added to a mixture of 1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-N-methoxy-N-methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxamide (2.0 g, 6.2 mmol) in THF (40 mL) at −10° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour then diluted with water and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc. The EtOAc layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 4-acetyl-1-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)pyrrolidin-2-one. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.10-7.13 (m, 1H), 6.43-6.45 (m, 2H), 4.41-4.42 (m, 2H), 3.79-3.82 (m, 6H), 3.46-3.20 (m, 3H), 2.61-2.64 (m, 2H), 2.04-2.15 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 3H). MS ESI calc'd. for C15H20NO4 [M+H]+ 278. found 278.
