Procedure
Hydrochloric acid (2.0 M in water, 21.4 mL, 42.8 mmol) was added to a mixture of (R)-tert-butyl (4-diazo-3-oxobutan-2-yl)carbamate (1.89 g, 8.86 mmol) in diethyl ether (19.27 mL) at 0° C.0. The mixture was stirred vigorously for 20 minutes and then allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred vigorously until the mixture went from yellow to colorless. The mixture was washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford (R)-tert-butyl (4-chloro-3-oxobutan-2-yl)carbamate. 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.34 (d, J=7.0 Hz, 1H), 4.64-4.51 (m, 2H), 4.23-4.02 (m, 1H), 1.36 (s, 9H), 1.16 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
