A thus produced 4-cyano-4-phenylcyclohexanol (b) obtained in step (1) is directly reduced, e.g., with lithium aluminum hydride (in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran) at elevated (reflux) temperature, to give a corresponding 4-hydroxy-1-phenyl-1-cyclohexanecarboxaldehyde (c). This compound is also prepared via the tetrahydropyranyl ether of (b).
