A spiro(cyclohexane-1,2'-indan)-4-one [11] [prepared as above in step (10) of the first process for producing the compounds of Process B] in the cold (at about 0° C.) in trifluoroacetic acid, has nitric acid added thereto and the low temperature maintained for from about 1 to about 4 hours, to yield a corresponding 5'-nitrospiro(cyclohexane-1,2'-indan)-4-one [29] .
