Procedure
To a solution of 19.2 g of methyl 2-chloroformyl-2-ethyl-butyrate and 20 g of triethylamine in 100 ml of dry ether, which is mechanically stirred and cooled at -10° C, there is added dropwise 12.8 g of N-methyl-β-alanine methyl ester dissolved in 50 ml of dry ether. After the addition, which takes 30 minutes, the mixture is stirred during 18 hours at room temperature. After filtration of the separated triethylamine hydrochloride, the solvent is evaporated leaving the desired product as an oil, boiling at 118° C (0.2 mm). Yield 93%. nD19 1.4646.
