Procedure
A mixture of phenylhydrazine (66ml.), 2-amino-4-chloro-6-methylpyrimidine (86g.), and sodium acetate trihydrate (120g.) in water (2 1.) was heated under reflux for 16 hours. The mixture was cooled, and adjusted to pH 9.0 by the addition of 40% w/v aqueous sodium hydroxide. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, and washed successively with water (2 1.) and ethanol (200ml.). The solid was crystallised from ethanol to give N-phenyl-N-(2-amino-6-methylpyrimidin-4-yl)hydrazine, m.p. 173°-174° C.
