A solution of tert-butyl ethyl(iso-pentyl)carbamate (490 mg, 2.28 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in methanol (3 mL) and 12N hydrochloric acid (2 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum to give 0.55 g of crude N-ethyl-3-methylbutan-1-amine hydrochloride as a white solid. 1H-NMR (300 MHz, D2O): δ 3.01-2.91 (m, 4H), 1.60-1.14 (m, 3H), 1.19 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 3H), 0.82 (d, J=7.8 Hz, 6H) ppm.
