Procedure

558 g of N-phenyl-3,3-dimethoxybutyramide were heated for 1 hour at 195° C at a vacuum of 60 mm Hg and after cooling to 60° C, it was added to 500 ml of isopropyl ether. The mixture was cooled and vacuum filtered to obtain 226 g of 3-methoxy-crotonanilide in the form of white crystals melting at 111--112° C.
