A mixture of 8.5 g of m-(n-butyl)-acetylacetanilide, 5.7 g of methyl orthoformate, 80 ml of methanol and 0.3 g of p-toluene sulfonic acid was stirred at 20° C for 16 hours and after the addition of 100 ml of toluene and 0.6 ml of quinoline, the mixture was heated at 140° C for one hour while distilling the toluene-methanol azeotrope. After refluxing for 30 minutes, another 100 ml of toluene were added thereto and the reaction was completed when the solvent was evaporated. The residue was chromatographed over silica gel and elution with an 8-2 mixture of methylene chloride and ethyl acetate yielded 6.3 g of m-(n-butyl)-3-methoxy-crotonanilide melting at 36° C.
