Procedure
The benzo[c]phenanthridine methosulfate (I, R5 is methyl, X is methosulfate) is also the intermediate from which 5,6-dihydrobenzo[c]phenanthridine (II) is obtained by reaction with aqueous ammonia. When the reaction between a benzo[c]phenanthridinium methosulfate and aqueous ammonia is followed by a reaction with methanol or any other alcohol, 5,6-dihydro-6-alkoxybenzo[c]phenanthridines are obtained (II, R5 is methyl, R6 is alkoxy).
