mCPBA (77% pure, 0.36 g, 1.6 mmol) was added to a solution of tert-butyl {4-[7-benzyloxy-1-(2-phenoxyethyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-2-yl]butyl}carbamate (0.89 g, 1.6 mmol) in dichloromethane (50 mL), and the reaction was stirred for 2.5 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. Additional mCPBA (150 mg) was added, and the reaction was stirred over two nights. The solution was washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, water, and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide 0.90 g of tert-butyl {4-[7-benzyloxy-5-oxido-1-(2-phenoxyethyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-2-yl]butyl}carbamate as a tan foam.
