Benzyl ether from example 28 (3.0 g, 9.64 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (150 ml) and 10% palladium on charcoal (800 mg) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred for a few minutes before ammonium formate (6.17 g, 96.4 mmol) was added portionwise. The reaction mixture was carefully heated to 80° C. until gas evolution had ceased. After cooling, the reaction mixture was filtered through arbacel, washed with methanol (50 ml) and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a white crystalline solid (1.51 g, 6.83 mmol, 71%). 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ: 0.91 (t, 3H), 1.58 (q, 2H), 2.10 (t, 1H), 2.22 (t, 1H), 2.40 (dd, 2H), 2.81 (d, 1H), 2.93 (d, 1H), 3.85 (t, 1H), 4.02 (dd, 1H), 4.57 (d, 1H), 6.79 (d, 2H), 7.21 (d, 2H). LRMS: m/z 222 (M-H+).
