PROCEDURE

The phenol from example 29 (110 mg, 0.45 mmol) was dissolved in nitric acid: water (1:3) (2 ml) and stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was then diluted with water (5 ml) and basified with NH4OH (1 ml), before extracting into ethyl acetate (3×10 ml). The organic extracts were combined and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a yellow solid (95 mg, 0.35 mmol, 79%). 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ: 0.97 (t, 3H), 1.33 (t, 2H), 1.43-1.79 (bm, 4H), 2.02 (d, 3H), 4.06 (m, 2H), 7.17 (d, 1H), 7.60 (d, 1H), 8.16 (s, 1H), 10.55 (bs, 1H). LRMS: m/z 267 (M-H+).
