Procedure
5′-Isopropenyl-2′-methoxy-4-trifluoromethyl-biphenyl-2-carbaldehyde (5.0 g) is dissolved in a mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran (100 ml), ethanol (30 ml) and methylene chloride (10 ml), and thereto is added sodium borohydride (646 mg) and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. The reaction solution is concentrated under reduced pressure and thereto are added ethyl acetate and water, and the mixture is separated, and the organic layer is washed with a saturated brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=49:1→4:1) to give (5′-isopropenyl-2′-methoxy-4-trifluoromethyl-biphenyl-2-yl)-methanol (4.73 g). MS (m/z): 307 [M+H]+
