To a solution of (6-iodo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-5-yl)methanol (36 mg, 0.131 mmol) and carbon tetrabromide (52 mg, 0.158 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (1 mL) at 0° C. under N2, was added triphenylphosphine (41 mg, 0.158 mmol). The resulting solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and was stirred for 4 h. Another portion of carbon tetrabromide (52 mg, 0.158 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (41 mg, 0.158 mmol) was added to the mixture at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (Si, 1% EtOAc in hexanes) to afford 5-(bromomethyl)-6-iodoindane. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.72 (s, 1H), 7.36 (s, 1H), 4.62 (s, 2H), 2.89 (m, 4H), 2.11-2.07 (m, 2H).
