A solution of the formamide in MeOH (20 mL) is stirred at rt and HCl (conc., 1 mL) is added. The deep purple solution is heated at reflux for 1 h, cooled and the MeOH is evaporated. The residue is stirred with water (20 mL) and NaHCO3 (sat. aq.) is added until bubbling ceases. The mixture is extracted with DCM (20 mL, 2×10 mL) and the combined extracts are dried over MgSO4 and evaporated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as an orange solid (870 mg).
