Procedure
A well stirred mixture of 2-(2,2-diethoxyethylmercapto)indole (1.5 g, 0.0057 mole) in polyphosphoric acid (30 g) was heated to 130° C. for 20 minutes, then allowed to cool to room temperature and the mixture diluted with water (300 ml). The resulting aqueous solution was basified by addition of solid potassium carbonate and then extracted with ethyl acetate (2×120 ml). The combined extracts were dried (Na2SO4), concentrated in vacuo and the residue chromatographed on silica gel eluting with 10% ether/60-80 petrol to afford the title compound as a white solid (0.56 g, 57%).
