A solution of 9.2 g of 6-benzyloxy-4-chromanone, dimethylamine hydrochloride and 1.3 g of paraformaldehyde in 100 ml of acetic acid was heated on a steam bath for 5 hours. The volatiles were evaporated in vacuo and the residue was purified on silica gel, eluting with CH2Cl2, to give 3.7 g of product, Rf (CH2Cl2)=0.5.
