N-(2-Methylpropyl)-4-nitrotetrazolo[1,5-a]quinolin-5-amine (1.0 g, 3.5 mmole, Example 15), ethanol (100 mL) and Pt/C were placed in a Paar apparatus. The mixture was hydrogenated at 50 psi (3.44×105Pa). The reaction mixture was filtered to remove the catalyst then concentrated under vacuum. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to provide 0.35 g of N5 -(2-methylpropyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline-4,5-diamine as off white needles, m.p. 148-150° C. Analysis: Calculated for C13H16N6 : % C, 60.92; % H, 6.29; % N, 32.79; Found: % C, 60.94; % H, 6.25; % N, 32.93.
