Phenol (1.88 g, 20 mmol) was mixed with NaOH (0.80 g, 20 mmol) in EtOH (50 mL). 8-Bromooctanoic acid (2.23 g, 10 mmol) was then added to the mixture and refluxed for 12 h. After cooling to room temperature, water (100 mL) was added and the mixture was acidified with 2N HCl (pH=2). The solid was filtered and washed with water (2×50 mL), and recrystallized from hexane-ethyl acetate (5:1) to give the product as white brick-like crystals (1.79 g, 76%), mp 67-68° C.; 1H-NMR: 1.42 (m, 6 H), 1.65 (m, 2 H), 1.80 (m, 2 H), 2.37 (t, 2 H), 3.97 (t, 2 H), 6.93 (m, 3 H), 7.30 (t, 2 H), 10.05 (bs, 1 H). Anal. Calcd. for C14H20O3 : C, 71.16, H, 8.53%; Found: C, 71.09, H, 8.54%.
