D-Glucitol (Aldrich, 1150 g, 6.31 mol) was suspended in aqueous 3M H2SO4 (550 mL) and heated at reflux with stirring under N2 overnight. The dark brown solution was cooled and neutralized using Amberlite® IRA-93 resin (OH-, ~4 L) Rohm and Haas, (Phil., Pa.). The resin was removed by filtration; the filtrate was decolorized using activated carbon (4 g) which was subsequently removed by filtration.
