To a solution of diethyl 2-methyl-4-(2-thienyl)-6-diethoxymethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (424 mg) in acetone (15 ml) was added 6N-hydrochloric acid (0.2 ml) and this solution was stirred at room temperature for an hour. The resultant solution was concentrated and the residue was extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed with water and dried and then the solvent was removed to give yellowish oil of diethyl 2-methyl-4-(2-thienyl)-6-formyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate, which was soon crystallized. The product was recrystallized from a mixture of n-hexane and diethyl ether to give the pure product (247.7 mg), m.p. 67° to 68.5° C.
