Reaction Steps
Treatment of 3-methyl-4-methoxybenzaldehyde with methyl(triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetate in a procedure analogous to that described in Example 20, step a. provided methyl 3-methyl-4-methoxycinnamate which was recrystallized from hexane to give white crystals, mp 70°-73° C.
