Reaction Steps
5.5 ml of H2O2 (30%) are added to a suspension of 11.25 g of 2-methylthio ethylammonium malate in 50 ml of methanol. The temperature is reduced to 30° C during this addition. The solution obtained is agitated for 4 hours. The sulfoxide formed is precipitated by the addition of ethanol while cooling, yielding 11.2 g of a white product melting at 106° C.
