40% monomethylamine--methanol (2.65 g, 34.1 mmol) solution was added to a solution of ethyl 2-oxo-2-[2-(tetra-hydropyran-2-yloxymethyl)phenyl]acetate (2.00 g, 6.8 mmol) in methanol (20 ml), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The solvent was evaporated, and the residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (n-hexane/ethyl acetate=4/1) to give the desired compound 2-oxo-N-methyl-2-[2-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxymethyl)phenyl]-acetamide (1.30 g, 69%) as an oil.
