N-(3-Cyanomethoxyphenyl)-methanesulfonamide (1.0 g) was dissolved in a mixture of 20 ml of chloroform and 0.25 ml of absolute ethanol (EtOH). The reaction mixture was cooled in an ice bath and saturated with hydrogen chloride gas. The mixture was slowly allowed to come to room temperature and stirred for 16 hours. The solvent was evaporated leaving 1.1 g of 2-(3-methanesulfonylaminophenoxy)-acetimidic acid ethyl ester hydrochloride. ##STR57##
