5-(4-Nitrophenylsulfonyl)isoquinoline 160 mg (0.6 mmol) was dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid 170 ml, stannous chloride dihydrate 650 mg (2.9 mmol) was added, and the mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. 4 N sodium hydroxide in water was added to the reaction solution, and the resulting alkaline solution was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was recrystallized from methanol to give 4-(5-isoquinolylsulfonyl)aniline 110 mg (76.5%).
