A mixture of ethyl 7-chloro-6-fluoro-4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylate (67 g), sodium hydroxide (12 g), water (350 ml) and industrial methylated spirit (175 ml) was boiled under reflux for 65 hours. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and acidified to pH 1 with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The resulting precipitate was collected, washed with water and dried to give the novel compound 7-chloro-6-fluoro-4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid, m.p. 263°-265° (dec).
