4′-Chlorobiphenyl-2-carboxaldehyde (4.1 g), tert-butyl piperazine-1-carboxylate (4.23 g) and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (5.61 g) in CH2Cl2 (60 mL) were stirred for 24 hours. The mixture was treated with methanol and poured into ether. The extract was washed with water and brine and concentrated. The concentrate was chromatographed on silica gel with 2-25% ethyl acetate/hexanes.
