(S)-4-Bromo-1-hydroxy-indan-5-carbonitrile (0.90 g, 3.78 mmol), imidazole (0.64 g, 9.45 mmol) and tert-butyldimethylchlorosilane (0.80 g, 5.29 mmol) are suspended in dry N,N-dimethylformamide and stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The mixture is diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts are dried and the solvent removed to give the crude product which is used directly in the next step (Yield 1.20 g).
