Procedure

To a 250 mL r.b. flask equipped with a stir bar was added acetic acid (50 mL) and hydrobromic acid in AcOH (27 mL, 149 mmol), then (S)-2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid (13.47 g, 74.3 mmol). To the stirred solution was added dropwise over 3 hr via an addition funnel bromine (4.14 mL, 80 mmol) in AcOH (20 mL). The solution was stirred at room temperature. After 9 days, stirring was stopped and the mixture was filtered (reaction time not optimized). The filter cake washed with AcOH (100 mL) and then Et2O (150 mL). The isolated off-white solids were dried under vacuum to afford the product (S)-2-amino-3-(3-bromo-4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, hydrobromide (23.9 g, 85% yield) as a pale yellow powder. 1H NMR (500 MHz, methanol-d4) d 7.47-7.41 (m, 1H), 7.12 (dd, J=8.2, 2.2 Hz, 1H), 6.92 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 4.22 (dd, J=7.6, 5.4 Hz, 1H), 3.23 (dd, J=14.8, 5.4 Hz, 1H), 3.08 (dd, J=14.7, 7.7 Hz, 1H).
