To a solution of 6-hydroxy-N-methoxy-N-methylnicotinamide (800 mg, 1.0 eq) in 20 mL anhydrous THF was added 3 M EtMgBr (6 mL, 4.0 eq) dropwise at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 2 h., quenched with sat NH4Cl, and extracted with CH2Cl2. The extract was dried, concentrated, and purified by column chromatography to give the desired product (320 mg, 48%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 12.13 (brs, 1H), 8.11 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 1H), 8.05 (dd, J=10.0 Hz, 2.8 Hz, 1H), 6.60 (d, J=9.6 Hz, 1H), 2.79 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.22 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
