Procedure

To a solution of mesylate 107 (24.05 g, 81.5 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (160 ml) was added potassium phthalimide (15.53 g, 83.8 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 14 h. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between hexanes-EtOAc (7:1) and water. A precipitate formed which was collected by filtration, washed excessively with water and hexanes, then dried under vacuum to give N-(2-(3-bromophenoxyl)ethyl)phthalimide (108) as white fluffy crystals (22.05 g). The second batch was collected by concentrating the organic layer of the filtrate under reduced pressure and suspending the residue 10% EtOAc-hexanes. The mixture was washed with water and the precipitate collected by filtration, washed excessively with water, then hexanes and dried under vacuum to give phthalimide 108 (5.65 g). Combined yield (21.18 g, 98%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.87 (dd, J=5.2, 2.8 Hz, 2H), 7.73 (dd, J=5.6, 3.2 Hz, 2H), 7.03-7.12 (m, 3H), 6.80 (ddd, J=8.0, 2.5, 1.4 Hz, 1H), 4.21 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 2H), 4.10 (t, J=6.0 Hz, 2H).
