To a solution of 2-phenylthiazole-5-carbaldehyde 38e (0.567 g, 3 mmoL) in 15 mL THF was added a THF solution of 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylmagnesiumbromide (0.5 N, 6.5 mL, 3.25 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was allowed to stir for 30 min and quenched with satd. NH4Cl, extracted with ethyl ether, dried with MgSO4. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to yield a crude product, which was purified by column chromatography to obtain pure compound 40e (72.9%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.90 (m, 2H), 7.64 (s, 1H), 7.41 (m, 3H), 6.69 (s, br, 2H), 6.04 (s, 1H), 3.86 (s, 6H), 3.85 (s, 3H), 1.57 (d, 1H, J=5.5 Hz); MS (ESI) m/z 358.1 (M+Na)+.
