A solution of 6-{2-[(4-methoxybenzyl)oxy]-4-methylpyridin-3-yl}-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidin-2-amine (3.92 g, 10.39 mmol) in dichloromethane (150 ml) was treated with trifluoroacetic acid (5.71 ml, 76.89 mmol) at room temperature. After stirring for 30 minutes, the solvent and excess acid was removed in vacuo and the residue was treated with ethyl acetate. Washing with sat'd NaHCO3(aq.) gave a yellow, amorphous precipitate. The solid was collected, washed with water, EtOAc, and dried in vacuo at 50° C. to give (1.65 g, 62%). HPLC analysis showed the compound has a purity of 97%.
