PROCEDURE

Sodium borohydride (417 mg, 11.03 mmol, 5.0 eq) is added at 0° C. to a stirred suspension of 6-methoxy-2H-1-oxa-5,9-diaza-phenanthrene-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (600 mg, 2.20 mmol, 1.0 eq) in methanol (60 mL), followed by lithium chloride (467 mg, 11.03 mmol, 5.0 eq). After 3 hours stirring at room temperature, solvent is removed and the residue is dissolved in methanol (60 mL) and treated with 10% palladium on activated carbon (100 mg, 0.09 mmol, 0.05 eq). The resulting mixture is stirred under hydrogen flow (3 bars) at room temperature for 3 hours. The catalyst is then removed by filtration and the solution is concentrated to give a residue that is purified by column chromatography (silica gel, eluent: petroleum ether:ethyl acetate, 4:1 to 3:1, v/v) to afford (6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-oxa-5,9-diaza-phenanthren-3-yl)-methanol as a white solid (400 mg, 74% yield).
