Procedure
A stirred suspension of crude 4-(5-chloro-2-methoxyphenyl)-4-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-6-(trifluoromethyl)-3-quinolineacetic acid, methyl ester prepared in Step B (2 g, 4.5 mmol) in toluene (25 mL) was treated with a solution of 35% HBr in acetic acid (5 mL). The resultant mixture was heated at 85° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue was partitioned between water and EtOAc. The EtOAc extract was washed with brine and dried (MgSO4) and then evaporated to afford the title compound (1.45 g, 78%).
