Procedure
To a stirred solution of benzofuran 2-carboxylic acid (2.50 g) in tetrahydrofuran (50 ml) at 0° C. under nitrogen was added a solution of lithium aluminium hydride (1.0M; 7.7 ml) in tetrahydrofuran. Stirring was continued for 2 h, allowing the temperature to rise to RT. The mixture was diluted with diethyl ether (50 ml) and quenched with water (30 ml). The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with diethyl ether (2×25 ml). The combined extracts were washed with water (30 ml), sodium hydroxide solution (1M; 30 ml), water (30 ml), brine (30 ml) and dried (MgSO4). Filtration and evaporation of solvent under reduced pressure yielded the title compound (1.11 g, 49%) as a colourless oil.
