Procedure
To a mixture of 2,6-dimethylbenzyl alcohol (17.1 g) and acetic anhydride (14.2 ml) was added 4-dimethylaminopyridine (17 mg), and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 5 hours. After cooling, the mixture was concentrated in vacuo, and ethyl acetate was added to the residue. The solution was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo to give 2,6-dimethylbenzyl acetate (22.5 g) as colorless oil.
