Combine 1-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-4-(1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)[1,4]diazepane (1.0 g, 2.77 mmol), N,N-diisopropylethylamine (0.79 g, 6.1 mmol), and dichloromethane (10 mL). Cool in an ice bath. Add dropwise methanesulfonyl chloride (0.41 g, 3.6 mmol). After 1 hour, warm to ambient temperature and dilute the reaction mixture with dichloromethane. Extract with a 1 M aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and three times with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. Dry the organic layer over Na2SO4, filter, and concentrate in vacuo to give 1-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-4-(1-(2-methanesulfonyloxyethyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)[1,4]diazepane: Rf=0.58 (silica gel, ethyl acetate).
