Procedure

THF (25 ml), and NaOH (0.8 g) were mixed in a reaction flask to which was added 1.24 g of ethanethiol (previously chilled in an ice-salt bath). This mixture was stirred at room temperature until all of the NaOH was dissolved. Separately, 4.5 g of 2-chloro-5-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)-3-pyridinecarbonitrile was dissolved in 25 ml of THF and then added to the previously prepared ethanethiol mixture. This combination was then stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes and then heated to boiling for 2 hours after which it was allowed to cool and then poured into 300 g of ice. A precipitate formed which was collected by filtration and subsequently recrystallized from a CH2Cl2 /hexane mixture to give 4.3 g of the desired 5-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-ethylthio-3-pyridinecarbonitrile, m.p. 80°-81° C.
