Procedure

At 0°, 0.18 g of potassium tert.-butoxide is added to a solution of 1.0 g of 1-[N-benzyl-2-(3-carbamoyl-4-benzyloxyphenoxy)-ethylamino]-3-[4-[4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-phenoxy]-2-propanol in 5 ml of dimethylformamide and the mixture is stirred for 20 minutes in an ice bath. At 0°-5°, a solution of 0.12 ml of methyl iodide in 3 ml of dimethylformamide is added and the mixture is then stirred for 4 hours at room temperature. The reaction solution is concentrated by evaporation, the residue is dissolved in water and the solution is extracted with ethyl acetate. After drying the organic phase over sodium sulphate, this is concentrated to dryness by evaporation, yielding the crude 1-[N-benzyl-2-(3-carbamoyl-4-benzyloxyphenoxy)-ethylamino]-3-[4-[1-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-phenoxy]-2-propanol which is further processed in that form.
