Procedure
Thieno[3,2-c]isoquinoline (13 g, 71 mmol) and 3-Chloroperoxybenzoic acid (57-86%, 21 g, 71 mmol) were combined in chloroform (300 mL) at 23° C. After 3 days the mixture was diluted with chloroform (750 mL), washed with 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide (2×500 mL) and brine (500 mL), dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give the crude product (13 g) as a yellow-brown solid. Recrystallization from hot ethanol (ca. 75 mL) provided the title compound (9.4 g, 66%, m.p. 190-95° C.) as dense brown needles.
