Procedure

4,5-Dichloro-2-methyl-1-(3-methyl-butyl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (14.3 g, 48.9 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (8.93 g, 50.2 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (1.18 g, 4.89 mmol) were suspended in 123 mL of benzene and heated at reflux temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and diluted with ethyl acetate. The reaction mixture was washed successively with saturated bicarbonate solution, brine, saturated ammonium chloride solution, and brine. The organic solvent was dried, filtered, and concentrated to afford 18.1 g of the crude 4,5-dichloro-2-bromomethyl-1-(3-methyl-butyl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester as a brown oil.
