A mixture of 5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1-(4-isopropoxyphenyl)indole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (259 mg, 0.57 mmol; see step (b)), NaOH (114 mg, 2.85 mmol), water (0.6 mL) and dioxane (3 mL) was heated using microwave irradiation for 1 h at 120° C. An additional portion of NaOH (100 mg) was added and heating was continued for another 30 min at 120° C. After cooling, the reaction was acidified with HCl (1M) to pH 2 and extracted with EtOAc. The combined extracts were washed with water, brine and dried over Na2SO4 and purified by chromatography to give the title compound (165 mg, 60%).
