30.8 g of 4-fluoro-3-methoxybenzonitrile, 39.1 g of 2,4-dichlorophenol and 78.2 g of caesium carbonate are dissolved in 180 ml of dimethylformamide and stirred at 120° for 22 h. After cooling, the solution is diluted with diethylether, washed with water, an 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, an 1N aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride and finally with brine. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to yield 4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-3-methoxybenzonitrile.
